In 2016, I went with Google Home speakers since I used Assistant on my phone and had a Chromecast. I bought many more Google and Nest products, including a Home Max, Nest Audio, Nest Mini, and two Nest Hubs. While these smart speakers may fill similar roles in the home or office, they have considerably disparate designs.
The speakers themselves don't make that choice any easier, because both are quite good; the Echo has been our Editors' Choice winner for a long time, but the Nest Audio is a close runner-up. The Echo's bass is a bit better and Alexa can use multiple wake words, but the Nest Audio sounds quite clear and Google Assistant is easier to talk to thanks to more flexible natural language recognition. In the sub-$50 price range, the Echo Dot has a clear edge over the Nest Mini in audio quality, but even those two smaller speakers work well for what they are and offer the same choice between voice assistants.
Stepping down from those models, the Echo Dot has a bit of an edge over the Nest Mini, which has fairly weak bass and midrange. Of course, these smaller speakers are much more suitable for nightstands and desks than serving as a room's main audio device. Getting a review unit late, as is the case with the Google Home Max, gives me the benefit of reading a lot of people’s opinions of a product before I formulate my own. And reviewing a lot of similar speakers before I evaluate the one at hand gives me a broad base of experience upon which to formulate mine.
When you buy one smart speaker, you’re basically committing to that line of speakers because you need to spend some time making them useful and getting used to their quirks. So the different products you can buy to supplement or upgrade your smart speaker experience could move your needle. While both the Echo speakers and the Google Nest speakers produce decent sound, we have to give the edge to Google here. When you listen to both speakers side by side, it’s no contest that Google’s smart speaker sounds richer and fuller.
I’ve gotten so used to saying “Alexa”, that remembering to say “Okay Google” instead often trips me up. Unfortunately, they won’t actively cooperate with each other, with neither company having an incentive to make that happen. In short, Google Home and Alexa will work together, in the sense that there’s nothing stopping you using them in the same house or even the same room.

We'd like to have seen track navigation controls onboard—you'll be skipping tracks either on your phone itself or with the power of your voice and Google Assistant. But there's no reason to exclude them from the design if you're choosing to include volume and playback controls. And hey, if we're being pie in the sky, it would have been great to enhance Google's voice options with direct streaming from Tidal or another lossless audio service.
